This wiki is dedicated to finding the best possible Web 2.0 sites for K-12 teachers, and discussing the possible uses of these sites by educators.
These sites should enhance student learning and teacher productivity.
Please feel free to add sites that you believe meet these criteria or comment on sites that have already been added.
Remember to provide suggestions as to how teachers or students could use these sites!
Web 2.0 Sites
These are but a handful of the myriad of Web 2.0 sites out there. For a more complete listing of Web 2.0 sites, visit the
Web 2.0 Directory or Seomoz's Web 2.0 Awards.
Surfing and Searching
Rollyo: Customize Your Own Search Engine
Rollyo is for anyone who is tired of searching for information, only to get results that have nothing to do with the original search. Rollyo allows you to setup your own custom searches selecting the websites you would like to search and leaving all the rest out. You can share your own custom searches or check out ones made by other members.
Yahoo Answers: Get Answers to Burning Questions
If you are looking for the answer to a question, but have not had any success asking your buddies, you might want to checkout Yahoo Answers. Here you can post questions, answer questions asked by other members, and read through questions which have already been answered. Simply setup your free account, and you're ready to go!
Del.icio.us: Bookmark Your Favorite Sites
Ever wanted to store all your personal bookmarks in one spot? Del.icio.us allows you to do this and more! Not only is Del.icio.us a central repository for all your favorite websites, it also allows you to share your bookmarks with other Del.icio.us users and see how many other people have book marked the same sites.
Portaportal: Create Collections of Your Favorite Websites
Portaportal does one better than Del.icio.us by allowing you to create collections of web pages based around a central theme. For example, you could create a collection of web pages with soup recipes. Once you have created these collections of web pages, you can allow guest access and have other's check out the wonderful sites you have found.
Magnolia: Bookmark, Rate, and Create Groups of Websites
Magnolia is slightly different than the other two book marking sites previously mentioned. While you can create collections of bookmarks, Magnolia allows you to rate the sites you have book marked and see the ratings others have given the same sites. In addition, Magnolia allows you to create groups. Lets say I am particularly interested in studying Cicada's and their effects on the environment in the Midwest. I can begin a group, add some of my own websites, and then grant access to other Magnolia users to begin adding sites and commenting on the sites I provided. In this way, community members can continue to add pertinent bookmarks to my topic and grow the group site.
Productivity Sites
Google Docs: Create Documents, Spreadsheets, and Presentations on the Go
Ever wish you could take your office with you? Well Google Docs allows you to do just that. After setting up your own account, you will have the ability to create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. These can be stored on-line or downloaded to your computer. You can even allow others to contribute and edit your creations.
Writeboard: Collaborate and Share your Documents
Writeboard is all about collaboration. Simply create a name for your Whiteboard, type in a password, and in minutes you can be collaborating with your colleagues: sharing ideas and editing documents to your heart's content. What sets Whiteboard apart from the pack is not the fact that you can collaborate, but that each successive change to your document is saved in real time as another file. This allows you to go back to any previous version of your document before the last revision was made.
Drop Send: Send Huge Files without Headaches
Sometimes you want to send large files over the Internet, but you are limited by the email service you use. Drop Send alleviates this issue by allowing you to send up to 1GB files over the Internet to anyone with a valid email address.
Omnidrive: Store all your Important Files Online
Where as Drop Send allows you to send large files over the Internet, Omnidrive provides one gigabyte of storage free for all users. Once you have setup your account, you can upload files and documents to store on-line. These files can be accessed from any computer that has Internet access.
Dropboks: Store files online with access from any computer
If you don't have access to a server, DropBoks is a great tool. Create a free account and have a virtual server with a 1GB capacity at hand. File storage is limited to 50MB per file, but the instant access is great!
Social Networking Sites
Citizendium: Wiki with a Conscience
If you are tired of wondering whether the information you read on Wikipedia is accurate and up-to-date, then Citizendium is for you. This site is a Wiki of a different sort. Here real names are used, credibility and quality are more important than quantity. Content is easier to read and is carefully checked with some "gentle oversight".
LinkedIn: Professional Networking
LinkedIn is like Facebook and My Space for adults! This free service is a great way to make (and keep) professional connections or find long-lost colleagues.
